Four killed as car careers into tree in Wirral

TWO men and two women were killed when their car smashed into a tree in Wirral.

The blue Vauxhall Tigra Coupé careered off Chester High Road, Neston, at around 2am yesterday.

The four people in the car – the male driver, aged 20, two women aged 43 and 19, and a man of 19 – all died instantly. One of the women was thrown from the car by the impact. Her body was found lying on the road a short distance away.

Cheshire Police said emergency services were faced with a “harrowing and distressing” scene.

Officers have now identified all four victims. They come from Neston but they will not be formally named until later today.

They were understood to be a group of friends, not related, travelling towards Hoylake.

Flowers left at the scene last night paid tribute to “Eddie”, “Michaela”, “John” and “Jill”.

The scarred tree where the four died was covered in floral tributes and teddy bears.

One read: “Eddie I can’t believe you’re gone. We had some good times at school. You’ll be really missed by a lot of people, especially me.”

Another simply said: “Michaela. Eddie, John and Jill. Always in our hearts.”

It is understood part of the Tigra flipped onto its roof and the car was effectively torn in two by the impact of hitting the tree.

Firefighters used cutting gear to free three of the victims from the wreckage and the road was closed for 14 hours.

The bodies were not removed from the scene until yesterday afternoon.

Police officers searched in nearby fields and undergrowth for clues to help them determine the cause of the crash.
