A SUPERMARKET planning to build a controversial new store in the centre of Neston has reaffirmed its commitment to the town.
Sainsbury’s and developers CTP want to build a 35,000sq ft foodstore, and open it by the summer of 2010.
The supermarket giant’s development surveyor Paul Miller said: “In these very difficult economic conditions it’s even harder to produce town centre schemes which can deliver all-round benefits.
“But we’ve managed it in Neston with the help and support of CTP and the borough council, and we’ll be starting work on site in March.”
Keith McCormack, of CTP, said: “We worked very hard with the council to produce a vibrant scheme which includes a new town square and increased parking.
“This will provide better trading conditions and creates a much better environment in which the market and other events can thrive.”
The store aims to be one of the first of its kind to achieve the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of “very good”. It will use energy efficient equipment including high-tech refrigeration systems and rainwater harvesting.
Borough council leader Cllr Justin Madders said: “The continuing regeneration of Neston town centre has been a council priority and being able to secure a quality retailer like Sainsbury’s is just what was needed.”
