ELLESMERE Port and Neston Borough Council is warning residents to be cautious of door-to-door fish salesmen after a couple were conned out of £400.
Traders selling poor quality or wrongly described fish have been found to be operating in the borough using high pressure techniques to persuade people to part with hundreds of pounds.
In one incident the council says an Ellesmere Port man paid a doorstep salesman £400 only to later discover that the fish he had bought was poor quality and not the quantity described.
Lyn Collins, the council's environmental Protection Unit Manager, said: "I would urge residents to be cautious before buying fish from door-to-door sellers and would recommend that people should buy from suppliers known to them."
