Question mark over the future of Marine Lake repair in West Kirby

Pierse Group spokesman Matthew O’Dowd said: “We are winding the company up and there’s a process going on that has only just started. There are ongoing talks with our legal teams to see where we’re at.

“This will be an orderly wind- down to get the money in and the creditors paid – this is not about running away.”

Initially, when the need for repairs was made clear, some users of the lake expressed fears that the extent of the work would make completion in time for the Wilson Trophy unlikely.

World-class sailors will descend on the town for the key date in the dinghy racing calendar this weekend.

Representatives of West Kirby Sailing Club have said they were grateful to the council for ensuring the event was not affected by negotiating the hiatus in the repair work.

Now the question for Wirral council, watched eagerly by lake users and West Kirby residents, is will the work restart after the competition?

A spokeswoman for Wirral Council said: “We cannot comment on the trading status of another company.

“We are confident that the work will progress after the two-week break for the Wilson Trophy.”

The original Marine Lake, at West Kirby, was opened in 1899 as a leisure facility, with the outer wall retaining the water in the lake and providing a walkway for the public.
