Tributes as popular Meols journalist dies aged 54

A REVERED Wirral journalist lost an eight-month battle with cancer last week.

The late editor of Cheshire County Council’s Your Cheshire, Amanda Nelson, 54, of Meols, died on Tuesday, November 18.

The former West Kirby Grammar School pupil began her media career as a trainee journalist with the Wirral News Group in 1972.

She then became a senior reporter for the Chester Chronicle and contributed articles regularly to the Daily Post, Liverpool Echo, Wirral Globe and Wirral News.

Amanda’s byline could also be seen for a time in Candis, a monthly Wirral magazine.

The mother of three spent her final years working as a press officer for Cheshire County Council.

Cllr Nora Dolphin said: “Everyone who knew Amanda within the county council – and indeed there are many - would like to send their deepest condolences to Amanda’s family.”

Amanda leaves her husband Frank, three grown-up children and a 10-month-old grandchild.

Her brother, Chris Garrett, said: “She was a delight and got on with everyone - people couldn’t help but get to know her.”

A private funeral service is being held today (Wednesday) and will be followed at 1pm by a service of remembrance at St John’s Church, Meols.
