Hoylake’s Victorian drinking fountain is restored to its former glory

A VICTORIAN drinking fountain in Hoylake has been restored to its former glory thanks to a £25,000 grant.

The structure was manufactured in Glasgow and installed on Hoylake and Meols promenade in 1897 for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

But years of weather corrosion meant the structure fell into disrepair.

Friends of Hoylake and Meols Garden campaigned to get funding from Wirral Council’s special projects grant - which eventually provided the fountain with £25,000 for repairs.

The water feature was transported to Wolverhampton for repairs and arrived home earlier this month.

Hoylake and Meols councillor Gerry Ellis said: “Repairing the fountain has been something we have campaigned for for a while now.

“There is still a bit of the fountain that needs to be restored and we hope that will be complete by November.

“The fountain represents character and heritage in Hoylake and we are very glad it has now been restored.”

The landmark sits adjacent to the new Hoylake RNLI lifeboat station which is due to be open next month.

Cllr Ellis added: “I am glad the fountain has been restored in time for when the lifeboat station opens.”
