Blood-soaked man terrorises neighbours in Greasby as wife lies dead

The scene at Locker Park

LOCKER Park residents have told how a blood-soaked father of three smashed his way into a neighbour's home as his wife lay dead.

Bernard Mannix told the News: "This guy was going ballistic and looking like somebody had poured buckets of blood over him.

"He was banging and saying 'I've killed her, I've killed her' and trying to get in through his neighbour's large window."

The Matrix armed response team rushed out to Greasby at around 2.30pm yesterday, following reports of a disturbance involving a man armed with a "bladed weapon".

Pump Lane, which runs adjacent to Locker Park, was sealed off and the addresses involved were placed behind a police cordon as officers and CID prepared for a seige.

Today, it emerged that Robert Bailey, who lives at 4 Locker Park, had smashed his way into his neighbour's home and the seige was based around this address.

Bernard Mannix, who lives two doors down, told of the fear that gripped neighbour Glenys as the blood-soaked man attempted to enter.

He told the News: "She had locked the front door and hid in the bushes.

"When we came in, the police led her down the path and brought her in here.

"Then she was worried about her house, because when police led her out, he was actually sitting on her settee covered in blood."

It is understood that Glenys' husband was away at the time but is currently returning home after his daughter informed him of events.

Mr Bailey gave himself up at around 5.30pm, but concerns had been raised further as he made his way through his neighbour's drinks cabinet.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder and has been taken to Arrowe Park Hospital as a precaution.

Police confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Mr Bailey is said to work as a driver for Arriva buses, and has three children, a boy aged 4, a seven-year-old girl and another boy of 13.

The murdered woman has been named locally as Elaine Bailey, but Merseyside Police has so far refused to confirm this.

A home office post-mortem will be carried out to try and determine the cause of death.

The incident was further complicated as a member of the police's armed response unit was involved in a head-on collision with a grey Vauxhall Astra, at the junction of Greasby Road and Circular Drive,

The officer in his 50s suffered head injuries in the incident and his Vauxhall Omega estate was badly damaged.

A 70-year-old woman was given oxygen on scene and taken to Arrowe Park Hospital.
