Green-fingered volunteers have helped spruce up Grange Community Park in West Kirby

GREEN-FINGERED young volunteers have been helping to spruce up Grange Community Park in West Kirby.

A nine-strong group of apprentices from ScottishPower, all aged 18-19, spent a week in the park earlier this month, weeding and mulching and tidying a new hedgerow.

The Friends of Grange Community Park say they are delighted with the teenager’s efforts.

Chairman Marko Muller said: “It was a really healthy, positive thing to see youngsters helping out a community project like this.

“We’ve held a couple of community project days but we didn’t get the work done as quickly as they were able to!

“We explained to them that it’s important to look after the hedge. Of course, it attracts wildlife and as it grows but it also improves the safety of housing at the back of the park.

“Work like this also improves the overall appearance of the park because it looks like people are caring for it.”

The Friends of Grange Community Park have been involved in several projects to encourage more wildlife into the green space - last year they joined forces with pupils from Hilbre High School to design and build bird boxes to create nesting spaces.
