Pensby is home to country's oldest fridge

THE oldest fully working fridge in the country is believed to have been identified – in Wirral.

It’s owned by Pensby couple Betty and Graham Guntrip who won a competition to find the oldest surviving refrigerator.

Mr Guntrip, 85, said: “We bought it in 1953 when we were living in Preston from an uncle of mine who had a shop in Hull.

“It’s a Bosch and it has been in use ever since; it’s never failed or needed to be repaired.

“The plastic inside had deteriorated a bit but I did a Heath Robinson bit and mended it, and it has been fine.

“When we were putting the date into the form it only went back to 1980. We had to write in when we had bought it.”

The Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances chief executive, Douglas Herbison, will present the Guntrips with a new fridge and take away their old one.

Mr Guntrip said he was looking forward to the new fridge freezer being delivered but added: “I don’t think it will last as long as the old one.”
