Royle Family star Ricky Tomlinson opens Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology ward

ROYLE Family star Ricky Tomlinson opened a new hospital ward refurbished with charity donations.

The new Mould Room at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology will make treatment more comfortable for patients with head and neck cancers.

In the unit a specialist radiographer makes a mask, which is an exact mould of the patient’s face, to ensure they stay in the same position during their radiotherapy treatment.

The trust’s charity launched a fundraising appeal last June to raise £150,000 for refurbishment.

Ricky said: “The work they do to care for people who are fighting cancer is second to none in my opinion and a lot of that is possible because of the work of their charity.”

Patient Rebekah Shaw, 10, who is currently being treated at the centre joined Ricky in cutting the ribbon to open the new Mould Room. She said: “It’s great to see the area where I had my mask made looking all new and modern – it will make a big difference.”
