A WIRRAL boffin has won a scientific award for his research into ponytails.
Dr Patrick Warren, based at Unilever’s research and development laboratories in Port Sunlight, co-wrote the work – which included a new Ponytail Shape Equation.
The article led to Dr Warren and his colleagues winning the Ig Nobel’s Physics prize – a parody of the Nobel prizes handed out for ground-breaking research.
Their study was published in the prestigious Physical Review Letters and provided “quantitative analysis of how hairs are distributed in a ponytail”.
Although the awards are jokey in nature, their stated aim is to recognise research that “makes people laugh and then think”.
Dr Warren attended the awards ceremony in Harvard’s Sanders Theatre.
He said: “It was a great honour to be recognised for this project. While the science might sound a little off-beat, it actually has important everyday consequences for Unilever’s haircare business.”
