A WOMAN was fined more than £200 for smuggling two cigarettes into a prison.
Maxine Sweeney, of Birchfield Road, Walton, had the roll-up cigarettes in her bra strap when she went to visit her boyfriend at HMP Liverpool earlier on September 14.
Prosecutor Amanda Haycock yesterday told Liverpool Magistrates Court that Miss Sweeney was seen on CCTV kissing and embracing her boyfriend while repeatedly looking around the room.
She was seen to put her hand into her bra several times before pulling something out and leaning to put it in his wheelchair.
Walton prison officers became suspicious and went over to the couple. They found two cigarettes on the chair and Miss Sweeney was detained.
The 39-year-old was banned from visiting the prison for three months and fined £225, which will be taken from her weekly benefits of £135 .
Carole Clarke, defending, said Miss Sweeney’s boyfriend, a paraplegic, had struggled with his prison sentence, having to spend his whole time in the hospital wing where smoking is banned.
