TRADERS say a relaxation of parking restrictions in Bromborough Village is encouraging shoppers to stay local.
At the start of this month Bromborough became the first shopping area in Wirral to trial “Stop and Shop”, allowing drivers to park for up to 30 minutes.
The previous restrictions meant only blue badge holders were able to use parking spaces near Bromborough’s shops.
Although drivers are only able to park in the village for a short period, shopkeepers say the change is already attracting more people into the area.
Stephen Muff, of butchers Muffs of Bromborough, said: “The parking restrictions we had before severely affected the businesses.
“A number of years ago people used to be able to park here. Then the council decided they couldn’t and they brought in the CCTV camera car so a lot of people who parked here were given fines.
“It really decimated the village but common sense has prevailed.
“We’re delighted with the changes and the village already looks busier.”
Bromborough Traders Association approached Wirral South MP Alison McGovern for help after she was elected last year.
Wirral Council will review the new parking arrangements in three months’ time.
Ms McGovern said: “The traders came to me because they were having real problems – before it was just too restrictive.
“We don’t want Bromborough to became a ghost town.
“To be fair to the council, they have responded well. They agreed to do an experimental traffic order and the traders tell me it’s working well.”
Bromborough Councillor Steve Niblock said a full review of the Stop and Shop would take place in December.
He said: “It’s being monitored and there’s an initial review after three months then a full review after six months on whether to continue it.
“The aim is to support traders and rejuvenate the shopping centre and if this does it then all well and good.”
