Bank Holiday bonanza at Caldy Rugby Club

CALDY Rugby Club is hosting a bank holiday bonanza this weekend featuring a two-day beer festival and the return of the Caldy Sevens.

The prestigious tournament, now in its 68th year, attracts big crowds each May to the Paton Field ground in Thurstaston.

It will take place this Sunday, May 29.

The family event is preceded by the Twenty-20 Beer Festival, which takes place at the club on Friday and Saturday (May 27 and 28).

Long-time organiser Roger Flashman said: “The response from teams across the UK has invoked a real buzz about this year’s tournament.”

Away from the sporting fun there will be percussion and dance from the SambAfriq Samba band, Irish folk music, food, a beer tent and some stunning stunts from professional cheerleaders Panache.

A new addition this year is the Caldy 7s Go Commando Challenge, which will see teams of four completing seven challenges, including strongman favourites like raising telegraph poles and pulling a 4 x 4 vehicle uphill.

The Twenty-20 Beer Festival will feature beers from Higsons, George Wright in Rainford, Wirral’s Brimstage Brewery, Spitting Feathers from Chester, Liverpool One Brewery and three ciders from Westons.

Organiser Iain Corlett said: “All the breweries have given us great support and we are very proud to be selling these local top quality ales.”

The Twenty-20 Beer Festival will be open 5-11.30pm on Friday and 12 noon – 11.30 on Saturday. Entry is £4 on the door (free before 7pm on Friday only).

The Caldy Sevens tournament, featuring 16 teams, kicks of at 12noon. Admission is £8 for adults (£5 concessions) or £20 for a family ticket.
