Bebington student becomes one of the UK's youngest councillors

A WIRRAL teenager became one of the youngest local councillors in the country at last week's local elections.

Young Labour member and former Wirral Youth Parliament representative Paul Aitchison, from Bebington, was elected to Lancaster City Council.

The 18-year-old will combine his new role with studying for his history and politics degree at Lancaster University.

He said: "I'm really honoured to have been elected. It is good to have people represented across all of the age groups. I might be a young councillor, but I work hard and know how to listen, and look forward to working with all councillors, irrespective of party.

"It’s daunting but I will take to the task in hand to the best of my abilities."

Wirral South MP Alison McGovern said: "I've known Paul since last year when we campaigned together in the General Election.

"Paul has been an impressive campaigner as a Wirral MYP, and when I saw him interviewed by the BBC in this role in the House of Commons last year, I knew he would go far.

"I'm so pleased he has chosen to become a Labour councillor. I know everyone in Bebington will be proud of him."
