THIEVES broke in through the back of a Birkenhead post office and made off with a cash haul.
The incident occurred at the Allport Road outlet in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Merseyside Police officers were called to the scene at around 5.20am.
The offenders were able to force open the cash machine and escape with a substantial amount of cash.
DI Dave McCaughrean said: “I would appeal to anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the Post Office on Saturday, or in the week leading up to the burglary, to come forward, as the information they have could be vital to our inquiries.
“We believe that the actual burglary may have occurred in the early hours of the morning and again if anyone has seen anything I would urge them to come forward.”
Last Thursday, at around 1.30pm, cowards took advantage of a trusting 90-year-old woman in Birkenhead by pulling off a distraction burglary.
Pretending to be from the water board a man knocked on the door of a home on Egan Road, claiming to check the taps.
The occupant let him in and while her back was turned an accomplice stole cash from her handbag.
The thief is described as white, tall, slim and well-spoken.
