Opening concert in Wirral’s Two Rivers Festival is full house

WIRRAL’S Two Rivers Festival 2011 is on a high after its opening concert, given by The Tallis Scholars, attracted a full house at St Saviour’s Church earlier this month.

The next event in the prestigious series takes place on Monday, March 28, when the festival, based at Birkenhead School, Oxton, will present a concert by two sisters who play in major European Orchestras. Flautist, Emily Beynon and her sister, Catherine who plays harp, will perform music by Debussy, Saint-Saens and the Japanese composer, Toru Takemitsu in the school’s atmospheric Victorian Chapel. The concert begins at 7.30pm.

Headmaster John Clark comments, “We are very lucky to welcome such fine international musicians to the school and are delighted to be associated with an event of such high musical quality.”

The concert is another celebration highlight for the school as it moves towards its Perfect Pitch event on June 18 featuring a much-anticipated performance by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

The school will host the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Vasily Petrenko, as they perform for an estimated audience of 4,000.

The concert will be held on the school’s cricket pitch and will also feature guest soloist, mezzo soprano Kathryn Rudge, and culminate with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, including a choreographed display of fireworks.ŠTickets are on sale online at www.birkenheadschool.co.uk, by post using a booking form available on the school website, or by telephone on 0151 652 4014.ŠTicket or other enquiries can also be sent to mary.butterworth@birkenheadschool.co.uk.
