Bromborough nursery staff were in for a surprise when a baby was born in their car park

BROMBOROUGH nursery workers got a surprise when a baby was born in their car park.

The day was just getting going at Busy Bees when the sound of frantic door knocking drew staff’s attention from their daily routine.

Outside was an animated man claiming his wife was in labour and there wasn’t time to make it to the hospital.

The couple had no connection to the nursery and had just stopped in the first safe place they could find.

Seeing the lights on in the nursery, it was before 8am last Thursday, the soon-to-be dad had sought help and stumbled upon one of the best sources - a building full of experienced child care workers.

Responding immediately, Busy Bees’ Irolida De Franca and Sue Lambert stepped outside to find the man’s wife in their car, on the verge of giving birth.

The pair said: “By the time we got back to the car, which was parked right outside the nursery’s door, the baby had arrived!

“Berny McHugh, our nursery manager, was alerted to call an ambulance while nursery staff assisted the new mum and dad by getting blankets and wrapping the baby warmly until the ambulance arrived and the cord could be cut.”

Paramedics soon arrived on scene as little William Joseph took his first view of the world.

Berny said: “We made sure baby was ok and mum was moved onto a stretcher and given gas and air.

“The paramedics said dad wasn’t feeling too good, he was a bit like a caged lion and didn’t know what to do.

“All the parents coming in saw the ambulance and thought, what’s happened?

“I said, it’s ok, a baby has just been born!”

The new family was promptly whisked to Arrowe Park, and Busy Bees sent on flowers and a balloon with their best wishes.

Berny added: “People were saying, because we’re in the nursery business they had come to right place.

“But this baby had come a bit sooner than we normally take them!

“It was unbelievable.”
