NEW Ferry and Bromborough are to receive thousands of pounds of government money in a bid to tackle high numbers of empty shops.
Councillors will this week be asked to approve plans for a major review of town centres across the borough.
The findings will be used to draw up individual action plans, with New Ferry, Hoylake and Seacombe first in line.
New Ferry and Bromborough, along with Egremont, will also receive an equal share of £52,632 “Empty Shops” funding.
Bromborough and New Ferry Councillor Steve Niblock said: “Bromborough has to vie with the Croft Retail Park but is still a vibrant shopping centre for lots of local people.
“In the case of New Ferry, there are some excellent shops already, although there are a number that are empty.
“The shopping centres of New Ferry and Bromborough are already an asset to the local community. However any additional funding or support they can receive is most welcome.”
Area forums will be asked to decide the best way to spend the Empty Shops money.
Wirral South MP Alison McGovern said: “The limited money to be invested in their regeneration must be done in an effective and innovative way, working alongside local people to bring about the changes they want to see.
“It’s not just about potholes and making sure the litter gets picked up – important though that is – it’s about highlighting the history and culture of our area, and making sure any empty properties are handled in a creative way to boost business.”
