LABOUR’S Alison McGovern pulled off a stunning victory in Wirral South, to leave the bookmakers scratching their heads and keep the seat in her party’s hands.
Facing a strong challenge from Conservative, Jeff Clarke, in the wake of former MP Ben Chapman’s decision to stand down, Ms McGovern registered slightly more than 500 votes ahead of her rival to claim her seat in Parliament.
The Liberal Democrat’s Jamie Saddler polled 3,000 votes less than Simon Holbrook accumulated in 2005.
It proved to be a bad day for the Lib Dems, as the party lost Bromborough to Labour’s Irene Williams and Clatterbridge to the Conservative’s Peter Kearney, in the local elections.
