Wirral tip site marked for ski slope

Richard Tracey, head of environmental quality at the Northwest Regional Development Agency, said: “Work on the final designs are only at a preliminary stage.

“The technical constraints of the site might well rule out the ability to build a ski lift on this landfill site, but we will be happy to review any evidence that suggests it might be possible.”

Local councillor Steve Niblock said it was “an innovative idea” which could bring in tourists, but said the complexities of using such a public open space will need further investigation.

He added: “But that should not exclude ideas such as this from coming forward to develop the site.

“This could be an interesting development which would bring in tourists from across the region.”

The Bromborough scheme is one of six ambitious ideas making up the Mersey Coastal Park Strategy, a £10m blueprint to turn Wirral’s coastline into a major attraction.

The council has teamed up with the Royal Mersey Yacht Club, in Rock Ferry, which is working on its own scheme to build a new clubhouse, refurbish a disused pier formerly used by an oil company and create a 100-berth marina to return international sailing competitions to Wirral.

It is also seeking investment to refurbish the derelict esplanade at Rock Ferry and overhaul Eastham Country Park, Shorefields Community Nature Park and Wirral International Business Park.
