Crews tackle emergency at top of 80m high wind turbine on Liverpool docks

EMERGENCY crews carried out the first-ever high wire rescue – of a Wirral firefighter – from the top of giant wind turbines on Liverpool docks.

The four Nordex-owned wind turbines at Langton Dock sit 80m above Liverpool’s dockland, and special-ist crews simulated a crisis just below the massive propellers.

Cameron Dunne, 30, based in Wirral, volunteered to drop into thin air outside the structure to get round the problem.

About 40m into the abseil down, he was buffeted by wind into the side of the tower, learning the hard way what problems an emergency team would face.

He said: “I enjoyed it and we expected something like that to happen but when I was blown such a long way from the tower I thought, ‘this could hurt’.

“But that’s why we’re here, to learn what the best way of going about it is.”
