Wallasey couple reunited with jewellery and family heirlooms stolen in house burglary

A WALLASEY couple have been reunited with treasured family heirlooms after a £10,000 burglary at their home last month.

The haul, taken while David and Margaret Bigmore were at church, included a watch and two Second World War medals awarded to David’s father, who served in the Navy.

The Bigmores, who celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary in April, also lost jewellery given to Margaret by members of her family, including a pearl necklace owned by her aunt Hilda, who died six weeks ago.

Police discovered some of their possessions last week hidden in a supermarket carrier bag at a house in Wallasey and believe other valuables could have been sold at pawn shops across Merseyside.

The couple were reunited with some of their stolen property at Birkenhead Police Station on Monday.

Mrs Bigmore, 70, a retired teacher, said: “Everything that’s valuable in money terms is still missing but the items that have been returned to us are so important because they all have a lot of memories associated with them.”

Mr Bigmore, 75, a retired architect, said he was particularly delighted to see his father Geoffrey’s Defence Medal and Ware Medal 1939-45.

Sergeant Lee Wilkinson of Merseyside Police said: “To recover items such as this after a burglary is very unusual and returning them to two such deserving owners really does give you a huge amount of job satisfaction.”

Two men have been arrested in connection with the burglary.
