SOUTH Wirral MP Ben Chapman knows his onions.
As part of celebrations for National Allotment Week, he visited Bebington Road allotments before heading to Victoria Hall to congratulate award winners at the Teehey Allotments and Gardens’ Association annual show.
He said: “I was delighted, as president of Bebington Road Allotment Society, to see that despite the weather for their open day, allotment holders were in good heart and rightly proud of what they had achieved in going from a site seeking allotment holders to now having a waiting list.”
And of the Victoria Hall event, he added: “This illustrates just how vibrant allotment holders are.
“The excellent produce on display and being judged was a tribute to the enthusiasm of all involved.”
As national champion for allotments, Mr Chapman recently led a debate in the House of Commons where he lamented both the national position and the long waiting lists for allotments in Wirral.
He said he had spoken to many holders locally and highlighted that Wirral’s allotment societies should be given more funding and support from Wirral Council.
