UPDATED: Two arrested on suspicion of assault after man found unconscious in Birkenhead street

TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of assault after a man was discovered lying unconscious in a Birkenhead street this morning.

The victim, thought to be in his late teens or early 20s, was found outside a flat in Argyle Street at 7.05am by passers-by.

They told police he was lying in the street and not moving.

He regained consciousness at the scene and was treated by paramedics before being taken to Arrowe Park Hospital by ambulance.

Following examination, he was found to have only superficial injuries but has been kept in for observations.

Argyle Street, Market Street and Price Street were sealed off after he was found but the roads were re-opened just after 8am.

The two men, aged 36 and 41, were arrested at a flat nearby. They are currently in custody awaiting questioning.

A worker at Argyle News, on Argyle Street, said: "I saw him lying on the floor. He was there for about 15 minutes then the ambulance came and the police arrived a few minutes after that.

"People have been coming in the shop saying he was hit by a bus."

A woman working at a sandwich shop in Market Street said: "I saw him on the floor when I walked past on my way to work. They already had a blanket over him and he was in a neck brace. He must have been lying there for about 15 minutes.

"People have been coming in asking what happened."

It is unclear how long the man was lying in Argyle Street before he was found
