M53 shut for five hours after chemical tanker fire in Wirral

A BURNING tanker carrying a flammable chemical blocked a motorway on Monday morning.

Traffic ground to a halt between junctions three and four on the M53 in Wirral, at around 8.30am after eight fire engines arrived.

No casualties were reported.

Traffic travelling north was flowing again by 11am, but the southbound carriageway was shut until 1.40pm.
