At the St James Centre Ms Routledge read extracts from the Wind in the Willows during a storytime session and handed out awards to the winners of a Ready Steady Cook-style competition.

She also spoke to some of the residents who use the centre and people who are currently sharing their skills as part of the Cascade Project.

Other guests included Mayor of Wirral Andrew Hodson and Birkenhead MP Frank Field.

Myrtle Lacey, chief executive of Age Concern Wirral, said: “We’ve recognised the importance of having dedicated facilities for younger dementia sufferers. Their needs are different and we need to respond to that.

“This is a really important day for us.”
