Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe to leave Merseyside Police for new job

BERNARD Hogan-Howe, the Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, is to leave the force.

The 51-year-old has accepted a new job at Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC).

His new job will involve inspecting police forces and authorities of England and Wales and implementing reforms outlined in a recent government Green Paper.

Merseyside Police Authority chairman Cllr Bill Weightman said: ‘I would like to thank the chief for the incredible hard work and commitment he has given.

“Together we have succeeded in making Merseyside one of the safest areas to live and work in the UK.”

One of Mr Hogan-Howe’s much-publicised priorities was “turning Merseyside Police into the best performing force in the country”.

Born in Sheffield, Mr Hogan-Howe joined the police service 29 years ago.

In 1997, he joined Merseyside Police as Assistant Chief Constable of community affairs.

He joined the Metropolitan Police as Assistant Commissioner of Human Resources in 2001, before returning to Merseyside as Chief Constable in 2004.

He achieved an MA in Law from Oxford University and a diploma in applied criminology.
