WIRRAL South MP Ben Chapman has received a letter from the Fees Office expressing “personal regret” over the “error” and “incorrect advice” he received regarding expenses claims.
The Labour representative has already decided to stand down at the next election, following the furore that was unleashed when the Daily Telegraph published details of a £15,000 “phantom” mortgage claim.
Mr Chapman stood accused of continuing to request reimbursement on a debt that had already been substantially repaid.
But his office has now released a letter from House of Commons’ Fees Office director of operations, Terry Bird.
Mr Bird writes: “I am satisfied that incorrect advice was indeed given.
“I regret a mistake was made by the department.
“I personally regret too the distress which is now being caused to you.”
But Ben Chapman is likely to be further dismayed by the claim forms officially released by government, including £19.80 on a toilet roll holder, £5.50 for an ice cream scoop and £1,229 for a Smeg fridge-freezer.
Labour colleague Stephen Hesford MP claimed £3,500 for a new bathroom, while Angela Eagle’s more modest total claims include £3,735 on redecoration, £69.99 on a new clock and £1,078 spent in BM Furniture, to purchase a mirror and sofa suite.
Birkenhead MP Frank Field released his expenses ahead of Parliament’s decision.
