A BOMB disposal squad was called to Mortimer Street police station in Birkenhead after a member of the public handed in what was believed to be a Second World War shell.
A house clearance team found a collection of weapons and ammunition dating from the 1940s, including a signal flare which was initially mistaken for the shell, while working at the home of a man in his ninties.
The unexpected discovery of weapons and inert explosives forced police to evacuate and close the station for more than an hour.
An MOD bomb disposal team and a fire crew were sent to the police station to make sure that the collection of devices, including the flare, 11 shot gun cartridges, seven small arms cartridges, a pistol and a large knife were safe.
