Wirral majorettes troupe scoop national awards

BATONS were thrown high in joy after a majorettes troupe won five national awards.

Bebington Sovereign Majorettes scooped the accolades at the Great Britain Baton Twirling Association (GBBTA) ceremony on Saturday.

Megan Davies, 11, was named junior mascot of the year; Tasha Adams, 17, junior leader of the year; and Katie Miller, 21, took senior leader of the year.

The organisation also took the title of overall junior troupe of the year and Britain’s most entertaining troupe of the year.

Actor Kelvin Fletcher, better known as Andy Sugden in Emmerdale, presented them with the awards.

Bebington Sovereign Majorettes have been going for 23 years and train at New Ferry Village Hall.

Principal Pam Moore, who took over three years ago, said: “The awards are based on their performance in competitions throughout the year.

“We were judged out of 18 troupes nationally.

“This last year is the first time we have been with the GBBTA.

“Parents, myself and trainers are all very proud of all the girls and boys.

“It was the proudest feeling ever watching them reap the rewards for their achievements.

“They train eight hours a week over three days, so their hard work and dedication is second to none.

“Majorettes is a sport we want to make more popular again, like in America.

“Our troupe is open to all children with different abilities.

“Although we are a military troupe we put fun and entertainment in to our routines.

“We will continue to compete and support them all the way to win more trophies.”
