Each week the Wirral News will turn the spotlight on a local artist or photographer. You can submit your photographs at www.wirralnews.co.uk/yourgallery. This week we feature Pensby's Valerie Marshall...

Name: Valerie Marshall
Location: Pensby
EVER since I can remember, drawing and painting have played an essential and very natural part of my existence. My thoughts even as a child were conveyed through my drawings and there was no greater treat than being given a heap of paper on which to draw to my heart’s content.
It was therefore an easy decision to follow a path studying art. I graduated from Manchester with a Fine Art degree many moons ago and went into teaching art a good few years later.
I enjoy imparting skills and knowledge to students and encouraging their imagination to produce images of their own.
My work almost always involves a figurative content and a good deal of it links to an illustrative style that overlaps with a love of the theatre and in particular a love of Shakespeare.
I love to draw and paint people, young and old alike. Friends and family often feature in my paintings as Shakespeare characters, especially when I can see a certain look that will go with my own perceptions of a character from a play. There is no end to the selection of material so I never tire of a desire to portray people in this way.
I am now looking to exhibit and sell more of my work to a wider audience and would love people to give me their opinions and advice.
