Wirral Egg Run cancelled again

WIRRAL’S famous Egg Run has been cancelled for the second time in a month.

Organisers announced in December that the event would not take place as planned in March because they were struggling to find sponsors.

But after United Utilities offered its support trustees and members of the Egg Run committee later announced it would go ahead.

But the event is now off again after organisers said “sufficient funding” could not be guaranteed from other sponsors.

It has also emerged that the usual end point for the event at Clatterbridge hospital – where thousands of motorcyclists usually converge – will not be available because of building works. The Egg Run sees thousands of motorcyclists taking to the roads of Wirral every spring to deliver Easter eggs to children in hospital.

A spokesman for the Wirral Egg Run said: “Despite a generous and much appreciated donation from United Utilities, sufficient funding cannot be guaranteed from other sponsors to meet the total cost of running the event safely and professionally.

“The Trustees and members of the Wirral Egg Run Committee fully understand and support Wirral University Teaching Hospital’s decision to go ahead with upgrading their site and accept that the improvements have to take priority over the Egg Run.

“We have discussed other options but with only seven weeks to plan such a major change, it is simply not feasible.”

Organisers have again pleaded with supporters not to arrange their own unofficial Egg Run or take eggs to Clatterbridge Hospital on the day. They said the Wirral Egg Run would go ahead “bigger and better” in 2014.
