A WOMAN suffered head injuries after apparently throwing herself from a taxi.
The 23-year-old from Upton was described as being in a serious condition in hospital.
The incident happened at about 1.15am yesterday as the woman was travelling alone in a black hackney cab from Wirral to Liverpool via the Wallasey Kingsway tunnel.
As the vehicle reached the junction of Kirkdale Road and Smith Street in Kirkdale she is reported to have opened the window, leaned out and then jumped.
Officers from Merseyside’s Road Policing Unit are investigating the incident.
A police spokesman said it was not clear whether or not the vehicle was moving when she jumped.
He added: “Officers are working to piece together the exact circumstances of this incident and are particularly keen to speak with anyone who either saw the woman travelling in the taxi as it drove from the Wallasey tunnel or anyone who saw the incident.
“After the taxi travelled through the tunnel officers believe that she lowered the window of the taxi and was leaning out of it.
“In the area of Kirkdale Road officers believe the woman jumped out of the window of the taxi.
“The woman was taken to hospital where her condition is described as serious.
“The taxi driver is assisting officers with enquiries.”
The ambulance service said they were called to the scene where the woman was unconscious but breathing.
She was taken to Fazakerley hospital.
One Kirkdale Road resident said: “I was woken up by the flashing lights outside my window.
“There were a lot of police here. There were cars and vans.
“They closed the road off in the direction away from Liverpool. I didn’t see the ambulances but I think it happened near the traffic lights.”
Another resident said: “My son saw the ambulances but he didn’t know what had happened.”
Officers are examining CCTV in the area and any witnesses are urged to contact police on 0151 777 5444 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
