Name: Mike Fenner
Age: 60
Location: Birkenhead
HAVING taught art for more than 30 years I took early retirement in order to pursue my interests in painting and music full time.
Because I taught art history as well as the practical aspect, my fascination with the way that painting techniques have developed over the centuries, as well as artists' styles of painting, have been a major influence on my own work.
I have spent years analysing the methods that various artist have employed and adapting them for my own purposes. For example: pre-Raphaelite glazing technique and impressionist colour using acrylics instead of oils.
I feel very strongly that we still have a lot to learn from artists of the past in terms of subject, technique and symbolism and in my own work I utilise traditional methods to express my own interests and themes.
My urban landscapes are largely based on memories from childhood and I am fascinated by the problem of illustrating natural and artificial light in the same picture at the same time as evoking atmosphere and emotion.
