Wirral student makes final of UK’s biggest singing competition

A BIRKENHEAD student has made it to the final of the UK’s biggest singing competition.

Holly Wright, 20, came through the regional rounds of Open Mic UK – which saw 10,000 acts enter.

She will now sing in front of more than 2,000 people at the 02 Arena in London for the national crown on January 19.

Holly said: “It was just so exciting, doing something you love and being recognised for it.

“It’s unquestionably the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I enjoy being up on stage so much and I feel so comfortable.

“Obviously I would love to win, but that’s not what it’s about for me – I just love performing, and always have done.”

A second-year English student at Coventry University, Holly was one of only three from the regional final in Leeds to make it through to the grand final.

Holly sang Too Close by Alex Care in her area final and then sang Pyramids by singer/songerwriter Frank Ocean in the Leeds regional final.

She hasn’t decided on a song for the 02 yet, but is thinking of performing a song by R&B artist Miguel.

Holly was one of two to be handpicked by the judges, saying they were “wowed” with her performance.

She added: “The feeling of being up on stage is just indescribable.

“For those three minutes in front of the judges I feel like everything in life is perfect. I really can’t think of anything I would rather do.”
