Hats off to Cammell Laird shipyard’s new recruits
ONE of Merseyside’s world famous companies is bucking the recession by recruiting new recruits. Shipbuilder and engineering firm Cammell Laird is taking on 18 apprentices.
The 18 trainees at the Birkenhead shipyard, aged between 16 and 23 are all from the Merseyside area.
The recruits will be taught in partnership with the Maritime and Engineering College North West which is based next door.
The intake includes five pipe fitters, four mechanical fitters and nine boiler makers.
Although Lairds is using its transferable engineering skills to diversify into other related markets, like offshore wind farms and civil nuclear, it has seen a resurgence in its original ship repair and ship-building business.
