Doddy tickled by new book shop opening

COMEDIAN Ken Dodd got out his tickling stick to brush up on his Shakespeare and other great authors to open a new Wirral bookshop.

Doddy was guest of honour at the new independent book store, called Literally . . . A Book Shop, opposite New Brighton station, at 9, Atherton Street.

The shop is owned by Cathy Roberts, who lives on a tug boat in Albert Dock, and is a well known educational story teller, who also organises the annual New Brighton Pirates Day.

In front of a packed shop of 60 people, Ken Dodd wielded a pair of large scissors to cut a red tinsel tape and declare the shop “plumptiously open”.

He said: “I wish this book shop every success and it’s great news to hear of a book shop opening rather than closing these days. I’ll be back to buy more.”

Bookworm Ken spoke of his passion for books and bought two bagfulls to add to his personal collection of 20,000 copies.

Such was his enthusiasm that Ken declared himself a patron of the shop and Cathy said a plaque would be erected to commemorate the opening event.
