Cash boost for “sustainable” transport in Wirral

MILLIONS of pounds will be spent in Wirral encouraging people to “get on their bike” or walk to work.

The £3.2m grant is Wirral’s share of £19.9m awarded to the Merseyside Transport Partnership – which incorporates Merseytravel and the five Merseyside councils.

In Wirral a key aim of the grant is to improve access to jobs through “inexpensive travel” such as walking and cycling, improving local infrastructure.

It also means that each of Wirral’s Area Forums will have around £20,000 to spend on road safety schemes in their neighbourhoods.

In addition the cash will help fund the Business Travel Support project which works with local companies to encourage employees to consider more sustainable forms of transport.

A report to Wirral council’s ruling cabinet which meets on Thursday recommends the grant be accepted.
