RSPCA Animal Centre in Wallasey considered stopping re-homing dogs as financial struggles continue

THE RSPCA’s Animal Centre in Wallasey considered stopping its dog re-homing service as its financial struggles continue.

Trustees of the charity’s Wirral & Chester Branch met last Monday night to consider the closure of the kennel block at its centre in Cross Lane, Wallasey, because of a drop in donations and mounting bills.

The closure was suggested because the number of re-homing oportunities for dogs has fallen, while costs are mounting.

It was thought the move could have ensured the long-term future of the centre’s cattery.

Trustees decided to try to retain a re-homing section for dogs for “as long as possible” – but they are warning the centre itself faces closure next year unless more money comes in.

A branch spokesman told the News reserves had “continued to dwindle”.

He said: “The Animal Centre provides an outlet for animals brought in via the RSPCA inspectors either as cruelty cases, neglect or injured stray cats.

“Currently there are 17 dogs in kennels. Twelve of these are ‘case dogs’ – awaiting court judgements – and sadly only five are up for re-homing.

“As one is a mastiff cross and the others are Staffies, they tend to get overlooked.

“Trustees are determined to keep the kennel block open, but it is ultimately dependent on local support and regular monthly donations.

“We will continue to review costs and income streams, but if current trends prevail then 2013 could see the closure of the kennel re-homing block and possibly the Animal Centre itself.”

In November 2010 the branch closed its clinic in Birkenhead – which was running at a loss of £20,000 a year – after trustees decided to focus resources on the centre in Cross Lane.

At the start of this year four workers were made redundant to save £30,000.

The branch relies heavily on local support and, with no direct government support, has struggled during the recession.

The Cross Lane centre, which provides welfare treatment and neutering schemes, currently re-homes over 700 cats, 120 rabbits and around 40-50 dogs a year.
