Wirral arts: Exhibition attracts artists across country

ARTISTS from across the country have their work on display in a national exhibition.

Wirral Society of Arts (WSA) have organised their sixth national open exhibition at Birkenhead’s Williamson Art Gallery.

It has attracted nearly 500 entries including artists based on the peninsular being involved. Nearly half of those submitted have been selected to be put on display.

The £2,500 prize money was shared among 12 winning artists, including £500 prizes which were given to Mark Elsmore, Lesley Barker and Harry Robertson. Principal museum officer for Wirral, Colin Simpson presented the awards.

WSA is a long established society, its first exhibition was held at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in 1949.

Member, Anita Reid said: “This is a significant event and has attracted artists from all over the country submitting work for display. However, Wirral-based artists make up the predominant amount of exhibitors and winners.

“We had 465 works submitted, with just less than half being selected for the exhibition. Around 154 entries from Wirral on show.

“There is a wide variety of subject matter and media used by the artists, which provides a richly diverse and dynamic exhibition.

“Each year the exhibition has gathered in strength and momentum.

“We have over 120 members in the society, and contrary to the title, artists do not have to live in Wirral.

“Although we are well established we are always open to new ideas and new members are welcome.”

The exhibition takes place at the gallery on Slatey Road until November 4, although closed on Mondays.
