YOUR CHANCE TO SLEEP ON NEW PLANET
THE ecoVikings project has invited ECHO Shipping Lines’ readers to suggest a name for its newly-recreated Viking ship which will be launched at West Kirby Marine Lake next Sunday.
The 16ft six inch-long replica Viking trading vessel is an exact copy of the only one found in the UK – at Ardnamurchan, in west Scotland, last year.
Big Heritage social enterprise programme archaeologist from Bromborough Dean Paton said: “In contrast to the Viking longboat warships this is their ‘Volvo of the seas’, ideal to carry a family of four, some serfs and a cow.”
Buried onboard the original ship was 10th century Hiberno-Norse ringpin jewellery identical to that found at Meols, Wirral, suggesting vessels like these traded around the Irish Sea.
The boat goes on show at the Museum of Liverpool on November 24-25. Send your name ideas to Dean Paton at info@bigheritage.org.
