Sauce boat pushes Mersey tug boat campaign
THE winner of the fine Blue Funnel Line silver-plated sauce boat in the ECHO Shipping Lines SS Daniel Adamson competition has been revealed.
The competition launched the new Danny beer, brewed by Frodsham Brewery, sales of which will help raise funds for restoring the UK’s last steam tug tender SS Daniel Adamson.
The 1903-built coal-fired ship is being restored to operational use at Sandon Dock, in Bootle, by the Daniel Adamson Preservation Society (DAPS).
Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Gary Millar plucked the winner and four runners-up out of 88 entries which correctly named the Mersey as being the river on which Daniel Adamson was built.
The winner of the silver-plated sauce boat inscribed with AH – Alfred Holt, owner of Blue Funnel Line – was Julie Wood, of Prenton, who also won a Frodsham Brewery Danny Beer presentation box and Daniel Adamson print by artist John Christiansen.
Four runners-up will receive a Frodsham Brewery Danny Beer presentation box and John Christiansen print. They are: Mrs M Brown, of Pensby; Rob Edwards, of Birkenhead; John Huw Jones, of Leeswood, Flintshire; and Kellie Collister, of Upton.
The event was held at the Ship & Mitre pub, in Liverpool’s Dale Street, because it has an art deco style function room which reflects that on Daniel Adamson and matches the silver sauce boat, donated by Liverpool antiques shop Circa 1900, of India Buildings.
DAPS chairman Dan Cross said: “The relation between real ale and steam power is very close but the maritime sector lags behind the railway one.
“We needed a great quality beer brewed by a committed brewery and Barrie Davidson and his team at Frodsham Brewery have pulled out all the stops.
“They will donate some of the cost of each pint to the Daniel Adamson’s preservation so one of the easiest ways of raising money will be asking ‘fancy a pint?’”
Cllr Millar, a long-term Daniel Adamson supporter, said: “We must look back at our maritime history to see where we have been and where we are going.
“Nearly £3m more is still needed so we can all savour the delights of the only steam tug tender in the UK operating again.
“As I do not drink I have been on Coke all night, but I am very impressed by DAPS’s achievements!”
