“THE fire service is critical to the safety of the people we serve. People rely on our professionalism and expertise in times of crisis.
“But we are also pivotal in our community – in Wallasey we provide a youth hub for our younger residents and the Heartbeat Gym for our older residents to get fitter and healthier.
“We have the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme at the station and provide a free community room with full audio visual IT for many local groups who offer sessions such as reiki, weight management and Greek classes.
“I run Wirral fire cadets at the station as a volunteer on a Thursday night with two other volunteers and our first course of 14 to 18-year-olds have just graduated with a BTEC award in Fire Services in the Community.
“Our crews attend schools and colleges delivering fire safety and road traffic collision education packages and we run well attended open days, encouraging children to take up sport and demonstrate how we deal with fire and road collisions.
“Crews also visit people’s homes to carry out free home fire safety checks to reduce the risk of fires. I also plan talks at sheltered accommodation to discuss fire safety and reduce false alarms.”
