A LABOUR candidate apologised for “offensive” tweets abusing Prince Philip and criticising her own party leadership.
Janette Williamson, who is standing in Liscard, said she let her party down over her comments on Twitter.
After the Duke of Edinburgh’s recent illness she wrote “why hasn’t he died yet?”
She also attacked her own party’s national leadership, saying “most are both unlikeable and quite right-wing” and “I’d like to congratulate Ed Miliband for probably losing us the next election”.
The comments were made public by Tory leader Cllr Jeff Green as nominations for the local elections closed last week.
A Wirral Labour Party spokesperson said: “Janette has apologised for her comments. We would like to make it clear in no way do these remarks represent the views of the party.”
Ms Williamson said: “I appreciate the tone and content of the messages was inappropriate and would like to say sorry for any offence caused.
“I promise to learn from my mistake.”
