Police, Fire and Inshore rescue at Woodside ferry
A WOMAN'S body was discovered on the banks of the River Mersey.
Police were investigating today after the remains of the woman in her 20s were spotted at around 3pm yesterday near to Woodside Ferry Terminal in Birkenhead.
Officers are working to identify the body, which was clothed when emergency services removed it from the mud on the rivers banks.
Last night, a home office post mortem revealed that the woman died of drowning and police are not treating the death as suspicious.
A member of the public spotted the woman, who is understood to have been wearing a hooded top, on the mud flats exposed by the low tide.
Staff at the land registry building nearby watched as fire crews assisted police in the recovery of the body.
A small boat was launched onto the river, and a cordon was set up during the distressing operation.
It is understood the woman had not been there for more than a few days and when a positive identification is made efforts will begin to trace the young womans family.
Anyone with information about the woman is asked to contact Wirral police on 0151 777 2254.
