Hilbre High School evacuated after strong winds damage roof

PUPILS and staff were evacuated from Hilbre High School in West Kirby this morning after strong winds overnight damaged its roof.

Engineers were called in after staff noticed the building's metal corrugated roof had started to lift on one side. They advised evacuating the school as a precaution.

It will remain closed until Monday.

A spokesman for Wirral Council said: "The school is closed today (Thursday) and will be closed on Friday because of a problem with the roof.

"They have got a structural engineer and a weather-proofing engineer there as well."

The spokesman said the extent of the damage was still unclear and the school was waiting for a report from the engineers.
