FALLEN servicemen past and present will be remembered during Remembrance Sunday services in Wirral this week.
The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Moira McLaughlin, will join other civic leaders and Cadet Alex MacAulay to represent the borough at this year’s Civic Remembrance commemoration at the Cenotaph in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead.
The Mayor will join former servicemen and women, their families and representatives from the armed forces at the annual ceremony on Sunday, November 13 from 10.55am.
Cllr McLaughlin said: “I am proud to lead the people of Wirral in remembering everyone who has made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
“They have not been forgotten and we will always honour, respect and appreciate their courage.”
Before the service military and other organisations will gather at the south side of Hamilton Square before marching along Hamilton Street to the Cenotaph.
There will then be a service of remembrance where guests will observe a two minute silence at 11.00am, marked by the firing of a ceremonial cannon.
The Mayor will then lead other local representatives to place wreaths at the memorial to remember those who gave their lives in the two World Wars and in conflicts since then.
Music and hymns will be led by the choir of the Priory Parish, Birkenhead and the Salvation Army Band.
Following the service, there will be a parade on Hamilton Street and along the north side of Hamilton Square, accompanied by the St. John Plessington Catholic College Band.
The Hamilton Square ceremony will take place next to a new memorial which was unveiled in September.
The memorial commemorates service men and women who have been awarded the Victoria or George Cross, 1,100 local people killed in action during the Second World War and those who have fallen in other conflicts since 1945.
