Wirral’s Hamilton Square railway station to be refurbished
WIRRAL’S Hamilton Square railway station is set to undergo a multi-million pound refurbishment.
The work will be carried out on the Birkenhead interchange as part of a £40m overhaul of five Merseyrail underground stops.
Specific details of how Hamilton Square will be upgraded will be revealed at a later date.
But it is understood the revamp will include new flooring on platforms and concourses and the replacement of the current 1970s-style wall linings to give Hamilton Square a 21st-century makeover.
However rail users are likely to have to wait until around 2014 before the refurbishment takes place.
Merseyrail has decided Hamilton Square will be the last of the five stations to be upgraded.
It will have to wait until improvements are complete at Liverpool Central, James Street, Moorfields and Lime Street.
But Wirral commuters travelling into Liverpool will start to notice a difference to their journey from next year.
Central station will shut for four months while its £20m revamp takes place.
Merseyrail said the long-awaited refurbishment, planned for April to August next year, will improve access and passenger flow.
Last year more than 18m people passed through Central, the busiest underground station outside London.
