TRANMERE Rovers fans stung over criticism of their club’s training ground development plans are fighting back with a petition of support.
Last week the News reported that the Prenton Park club is being urged to rethink plans for almost 100 homes on its former training ground at Ingleborough Road.
The land includes a plaque and trees planted in memory of 88 old boys of Birkenhead Institute, killed in World War I.
Although the proposals would see the plaque moved, historians and some local campaigners said they thought the land should be preserved.
But supporters are calling for Wirralians to speak up and back their club.
One fan, Kenny Clarke, said the club had been subjected to “vexatious and malicious attacks”.
He said: “We as Tranmere fans, Wirral residents and council tax payers, are facing attacks, for simply wanting our club to progress and succeed.
“The plans submitted, rightly include re-siting of the plaque.”
He said the planned petition would be available soon on unofficial supporters websites.
